Let me introduce you to the Pentel Rollerball, a green and charming outsider in here among all the posha brush pens.
Look, pens are important, we all know that. But they can be important for different reasons. A lettering pen, such as a fineliner, should have a reasonably slow tip, because if it is too fast, it is hopelessly difficult to get the details right and the flow of ink is more likely to be uneven. Anyone who’s been to my workshops knows that I talk about drawing very slowly in order to have a chance of getting it right, and therefore the pen should act accordingly.
But. When it comes to handwriting, writing notes for the family, a grocery shopping list or, as I do, every day planning and journaling, you do NOT want a slow and dull pen. I need to write fast as hell to get all the thoughts in my head out on paper before I forget them (and believe me, there are MANY) which means that I need a little race car of a pen. If it’s too sluggish, my hand hurts, and I get kind of stressed because I can’t keep up. So, dear friends, just like with any other pen and paper, I have done my research properly. Believe me when I say that there are many pens that have been bought, tested and rejected. I have done the hard work for you, plain and simple.
And this little green treat is the result. You probably recognize it, it’s an old champ – the oldest among rollerball pens, even, according to Pentel. And yes, it may look a bit plasticky but it’s made from 75% recycled material, just so you know. It is also said that Queen Elizabeth II herself wrote with this but what do I know.
Either way, you have my favorite pen here. It is useless for lettering but great for everything else!
