Different characteristics of brush pens

The behavior of a brush pen depends on several factors. Obviously, the consistency of the pigment and the flow play a big role. But even the brush tip itself can vary between different pens.

Here is an overview of some key aspects:

Material of the lace

Brush pens are available with tips made of different materials, and this affects how they feel to use.

Natural bristles – Traditionally, these come from marten or vessel hair. They most closely resemble a real brush and give a very soft and supple feel.

Synthetic tips – These are usually made of nylon and are very similar to real brushes, but are a little easier to handle.

Felt tips – Made of plastic and more solid in shape. They require less control of the brush pen and produce smoother lines without having to worry too much about pressure.

Size of brush pen

The size of the tip of a brush pen can vary.
The most common sizes are:

Wide tips – Perfect for strong, clear lines.
Finetips – Better for details and smaller compositions.

How much a brush pen can vary in line width depends on both the size and hardness of the tip. So the choice of pencil depends entirely on what you want to create!

I’ve made a video where you can see a comparison between some of the most common pens on the market.

Hardness of the tip

Brush pens can have anything from soft to hard tips. A softer tip gives more variation in line width, but requires a little more control. A firm-tipped brush pen can also provide variation, but requires a little more pressure.

Generally speaking, brush tips are softer, while synthetic and felt tips are a bit firmer.
